Use your mobile as home surveillance Updated:Wed, 07 May 2008 11:34:18 While technology keeps expanding it seems that those using the equipment are not kept up-to-date when it comes to using that equipment. Sky news has reported that CCTV equipment in the UK is a total fiasco and failing to beat crime on the streets because detectives do no know how to use the images they see! Some have also reported that the job of looking through those images is too hard! Britain is very security conscious; we have more security cameras than any other country. While the CCTV in the streets does not appear to be working so well, individuals can set up their own to keep their home safe.
All that’s needed for you to monitor your own home is one of the latest mobile camera phones capable of taking video and some software bought online. As the majority of mobile phones have very little memory internally, you will also need to buy an SDcard, Mini SD memory card or MicroSD memory card on which to store the images and video your mobile captures.
This system will work at night providing of course there is adequate lighting. Simply buy or get a free trial first of the CCTV software and then install it on your phone and PC. You are able to install the software directly to the SD memory card, MicroSD memory card or Mini SD memory card on your phone. Then plug your phone into the USB connection on your PC point it out of the window and run the software. The phones camera will pick up the image and rely it for you to see on the PC screen. While software is available for many different phones, I tried it very successfully on my Nokia E65 using a trial version of CCTV software.
The Nokia E65 has a 2 megapixel camera that works brilliantly in daylight and adequately in the dark; there is no flash so you do have to make sure the area you are watching is well lighted. The Nokia E65 takes a MicroSD card and if you don’t want to run out of memory really quick when using your phone as CCTV, then buying extra memory is a must. Of course if you do catch something untoward happening in your back yard then simply unplug the phone from the PC with the evidence still on the MicroSD memory card and phone the police immediately from your mobile. Along with acting as a CCTV camera you can also use the software with your Nokia E65 and many of the Nokia range of mobiles as a webcam.
